Sally Mann takes photographs of her children in a way that takes away their youth and innocence. She dresses them up so that they are not wearing many clothes and uses 'grown up' props like makeup and cigarettes to enhance the fact they are growing up fast or are put in adult situations. In all images the children do not have a happy facial expression suggesting they are not living life as normal children.
